3 Reasons to Join Costco (and 2 Reasons to Stay Away)

<!–*/ */ /*–>*/ For many people, it makes sense to join a warehouse club. You pay Costco (NASDAQ: COST) $60 (or $120 for an Executive membership that comes with cashback opportunities) and you save money on a wide assortment of goods by buying in bulk at low-margin rates. In most cases, that’s a deal people are willing to make. It’s not, however, a deal that works for everyone. Before you join Costco, you should consider the pros and cons. Signing up makes sense for many people, but for some, it’s a bad deal and a waste of money. Buying in bulk requires planning. In many cases, the perishable things you purchase will go bad at some point. That means you need a plan to use them before they expire. You may save a significant amount of money buying cereal, for example, in a two-pack of extra-large boxes. That’s only a good deal if you eat what you buy before it goes stale. Buying a year’s worth of Tylenol and bulk coffee pods requires someplace to put those purchases. If you don’t have space to easily store what you buy, a warehouse club may not be right for you. Costco offers a changing array of merchandise. That can be great w...

News surfaced that the dog of a coronavirus patient in China tested “weak positive” and in the same internet instant, photos of dogs wearing medical face masks popped up all over the web. While maintaining the health of yourself and the people around you is at the forefront of the world’s focus during the coronavirus (a.k.a., COVID-19) pandemic, these headlines and memes have brought up an important question: What about your pets? Good news: there’s no reason to believe that pets can get the coronavirus. (Photo: Getty Images / Maryviolet) The CDC says there’s no evidence that any animals in the U.S. have contracted or can spread the virus. This also means that quarantining them is an unnecessary measure. (And using medical masks, even for entertaining photo ops, is a wasteful and potentially dangerous practice, in light of shortages of these ...

Empty handwashing stations not helping homeless, or anyone else

When I asked what happened, she said one of her two puppies scratched her and then she picked at the wound. “My hands weren’t fully clean and it got infected,” said Kaplus, who is homeless and lives in an RV with boarded-up windows and a leaky roof behind a private lot on Wood Street in Oakland. At a time when we’re being advised — no, warned — to wash our hands excessively, Kaplus and the more than 29,000 homeless people in the Bay Area’s nine counties are in a vulnerable position: They can’t easily clean their hands. That’s got the attention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC guidance for cities responding to homelessness during the coronavirus pandemic includes providing access to “portable latrines with handwashing facilities for encampments of more than 10 people.” A week ago, The Chronicle reported that Mayor Libby Schaaf said Oakland had provided portable toilets, hand sanitizer and handwashing stations at 20 additional encampments. That means 40 encampments in Oakland should have health and hygiene services, including garbage collection. But in trips to encampments and in interviews with homeless people in the past week, I’ve found that many handwashi...

Arizona COVID-19 cases now at 665 | The Verde Independent

COVID-19 confirmed cases in Arizona have jumped to 665, according to the Friday morning report issued by the Arizona Department of Health Services. That is an increase of 157 new cases statewide in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day jump since the state began documenting coronavirus confirmed cases. ADHS has confirmed 621 new cases in Arizona since March 19. The state also has categorized the caseload as “widespread” with cases now reported in 13 of the state’s 15 counties. Closer to home, ADHS reported there are now nine cases in Yavapai County. Yavapai County Community Health Services Public Health Coordinator Terri Farneti reported five of the cases are in the Verde Valley area, and four are in the Prescott/Quad-Cities area. “Seven of the cases are senior citizens, the other two are adults,” said Farneti. “All nine cases appear to be travel-related, no evidence of community spread at this time. As tests are reported to YCCHS, the number of cases may not match the Arizona Department of Health’s numbers, as Medsis reporting is updated as of 5 p.m. the night before, and cases continue to be reported throughout the day. All Arizonans should assume the virus is present in t...

The Biji-biji Group (Biji-biji Initiative, Me.reka and Taylors Me.reka Makerspace) have come together to offer assistance

The Biji-biji Group (Biji-biji Initiative, Me.reka and Taylors Me.reka Makerspace) have come together to offer assistance to those working on the frontline to combat the spread of Covid-19.  Biji-biji Initiative CEO Juliana Adam tells Enterprise that people from the group were in contact with doctors desperately pleading to get a hold of personal protective equipment (PPE), specifically face shields. “Since we have a full list of makers and machines, we thought why not try making a prototype,” she says, adding that on Sunday, March 22, the group put out a call on social media for materials. They received an overwhelming response from people who wanted to help. The materials requested were 4mm or 5mm acrylic sheets (priced between RM210 and RM250 for a 4×8 acrylic sheet) and 0.2mm transparent and rigid A4 plastic sheets (priced at RM0.25 per piece when ordered in bulk). “People wanted to give us things non-stop. It is overwhelming for the team because we did not expect things to escalate like this and we are humbled at the amount of people who want to help. But the main thing that we need is the acrylic sheet, which is the part that is clipped to a person’s forehead,” says J...

No brain, no gain: Laptop docks for smartphones fall short

Powered by a smartphone’s processor, storage, and connectivity, laptop docks should be a showcase for desktop environments such as Samsung’s DeX. But the small teams creating them haven’t supported a quality experience. Almost three years ago, I wrote about the then-growing crowd of desktop environments embedded within smartphones. These environments kick in when you connect a smartphone to a larger monitor. Doing so with an iPhone allows you to simply mirror your display. But a Samsung phone equipped with the company’s DeX environment (Galaxy S-series and Note) offers the option of a  desktop experience that includes a taskbar and runs Android apps in resizable windows. Add a keyboard and mouse connected with Bluetooth or a USB-C hub and, voila!, you have a comfortable PC-like environment. You can still use Microsoft’s free upgrade tools to install Windows 10 on an old PC running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. No product key is required, and the digital license says you’re activated and ready to go. When these environments first appeared, they were focused on the scenario of someone bringing a phone into an office where they would connect to a des...
