Brass Community School kindergartners Valeria Garcia, left, and Armando Barajas-Castillo, right, paint pots and plant plants in Laura Marran and Henry Thurman’s class at the school on Thursday.

Thanks to Jen Conrad of Unique Blooms and Stephanie Ash of Arbitrary Creations, the students painted small ceramic pots and then filled them with soil and plants.

“It was great,” Conrad said. “The teachers were thrilled, and every one of the kids was focused and engaged.”

After the children potted their plants, they were taught how to care for them, including sunlight, soil and watering.

This is the first time Conrad hosted a “Paint and Plant” activity in a school. She does them regularly at Union Park Tavern.

The idea came from her sons, who wanted use money they received for Christmas to give back to the community, specifically to kids at Brass School.

Her sons — Harborside Academy students Morgan Meyer, Matthew Conrad and Michael Conrad — also helped out with the event.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” Jen said. “We hope to create a fund and do a larger program.”
